“Vesna Bukovec je že od njenih prvih risb namenjenih javnosti zvesta preprosti črti. Brez senčenj in iluzije prostora ustvarja polno pomenske podobe. Čeprav so včasih nekoliko konceptualne, so kot same estetska celota in ne potrebujejo posebnega konteksta. Motive izbira z medijskega sveta interneta, televizije, priljubljenih revij, kar lahko opazimo tudi v njenih videih. Z njimi pa obravnava predvsem teme, ki se nanašajo na potrošniško družbo hipnega zadovoljstva in nekatere frustracije, ki jih življenje v takšni družbi povzroča v posamezniku. Risbe so polne humorja a hkrati realno trpke. Kažejo se kot ogledalo družbe, ki je ukrivljeno tako, da poudari določeno lastnost, določena razmerja. Risbe Vesne Bukovec so svojevrstne karikature in z vključevanjem besedil v rokopisu, spominjajo včasih tudi na strip. Pisani jezik je vedno angleški. Na prvi pogled se mogoče zazdi, da se je avtorica odločila zanj iz razloga, na katerega je leta 1992 Mladen Stilinović pokazal s prstom, ko je izjavil, da umetnik, ki ne govori angleško, ni umetnik. Morda je ta izjava tudi res vplivala na njeno odločitev. Vendar, če v tem kdo vidi lahko rešitev za hitro slavo ter se zadovolji s cinizmom konteksta, naj se vpraša ali mogoče izbira jezika ni konceptualni del umetnine kot take in s tem Stilinovićevo izjavo parafrazira. S tem poudarja predvsem cinizem družbeno-politično-ekonomskega stanja v sodobni, globalizirani družbi.”

O avtorici

Vesna Bukovec (1977) je diplomirala in magistrirala iz kiparstva na Akademiji za likovno umetnost in oblikovanje v Ljubljani. Deluje kot samostojna avtorica in v okviru umetniške skupine KOLEKTIVA (z Metko Zupanič in Lado Cerar). Ustvarja v različnih medijih (video, fotografija, risba, instalacija) in pri tem uporablja različne postopke (raziskava, apropriacija, participacija idr.).
Predstavila se je na vrsti samostojnih (Center in Galerija P74, 2003 in 2005; Galerija Simulaker, 2006, Galerija Miklova hiša, 2009; Kulturni inkubator, KAPSULA, 2010; Galerija A+A, EX-garaža, Cankarjev dom, 2011; Miheličeva galerija, Galerija Alkatraz, 2012) in skupinskih razstav (25. mednarodni grafični bienale, MGLC, Ljubljana, 2003; Teritoriji, identitete, mreže: slovenska umetnost 1995-2005, Moderna galerija, 2005; Kunsthaus, Gradec, 2006; Koroška galerija likovnih umetnosti Slovenj Gradec, 2008; U3 – 6. trienale sodobne umetnosti v Sloveniji, Moderna galerija; Where do we go from here?, Secession, Dunaj; Minimal Differences, White Box, New York, 2010; Nagrada skupine OHO 2012, Galerija Vžigalica; 16. “Already since her first drawings for the public, Vesna Bukovec has been faithful to simple lines. Without shading or the illusion of space, she creates images full of meaning. Although they can be conceptual, they are an aesthetic whole, with no need for a special context. She chooses the motives from the media world of the Internet, television, popular magazines, which we can also see in her videos. She especially deals with themes relating to the consumer society of instant gratification and to some of the frustrations which life in this society provokes in the individual. The drawings are full of humour and also realistically brutal. They appear as a mirror of society, tilted in such a way that it highlights specific characteristics, specific relations. The drawings of Vesna Bukovec are particular caricatures and with the inclusion of handwritten texts, are also reminiscent of comic strips. The language of the writing is always English. At first glance it seems possible that the artist has decided to use it for the same reason that Mladen Stilinović pointed out with his finger in 1992 when he stated that an artist who doesn’t speak English isn’t an artist. Perhaps that statement did truly influence her decision. However, if in that choice someone can see an easy recipe for quick fame and is satisfied with the cynicism of the context, it would be best to ask whether the use of language isn’t a conceptual aspect of the artwork as such, and with that a paraphrase of Stilinović’s statement. With that it especially strikes the cynicism of the social-political-economic state of the contemporary, globalised society.”

About the artist

Vesna Bukovec(1977) graduated and completed her MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. She works independently and in the art group KOLEKTIVA (with Metka Zupanič and Lada Cerar). Her artistic work finds its expression in a variety of media (video, photography, drawing, installation) and approaches (research, appropriation, participation, etc.).
