Contemporary art scene (especially video art) in Bosnia & Herzegovina is very interesting because it presents and deals with some issues, problems and relations between the past – in terms of politics, ideology and history – and nowadays, the present. Bosnian video art is represented by three different varieties: firstly, there are works that refer to the recent war and posttraumatic elements in society, next, there are works that refer to some universal problems and ideas of media and art, and finally, there are works that refer to questions of personal and social identity. This selection (compilation) of video art is a part of namaTRE.ba 3 video project which is a kind of “other” independent video art scene inside Bosnia & Herzegovina which represents (un)institutional art.

—

Za različne medije piše o filmu, videu in kiberprostoru. Predstavil se je na številnih samostojnih in skupinskih razstavah v BiH in po Evropi.

14 May - 11 June 2010
Photon Gallery, Ljubljana
Opening view on 14 May 2010 at 8 p.m.

We kindly invite you to attend the curator’s talk on Tuesday, 25 May 2010 at 5 p.m. The talk will be in English language.

Curated by: Evelin Stermitz

Participating artists: Barbara Agreste (IT/UK), Ana Grobler (SLO), Michelle Handelman (USA), Kika Nicolela (BR/USA), Suzy Okamoto (BR/USA), Duba Sambolec (SLO/NOR), Iris Selke (DE), Evelin Stermitz (A/SLO)

Kika Nicolela, Ecstasy Poem, video still

Red, as a superior color, has gained various meanings in its symbolism during history, culture and religion. In general red is associated with a duality of meanings between life and death, as destructive and dangerous the color is related to aggression but also to vitality and power, to fire as well as to blood and love, and in contrast to this to agony, also associated with devil and hell, prostitution and sexuality. Red can appear as offensive and intrusive, a color of rage and love. Basically red symbolizes strong emotions of profound urges and impulses. In relation to women, this powerful and ingenious color is gendered in various contexts. Aspects of female connotations and narrations of the color red are symbolized in the selected video works.

The woman in a red dress is foregrounded in the work Flux by Kika Nicolela and Suzy Okamoto as well as in Ophelia by Iris Selke, with flowing connotations of sexuality, female power and doom. In Airport Revisited by Duba Sambolec, red is used in a textual structure to centre the self of a woman and of any other group that is underrepresented, oppressed and neglected in social structures and language. Blood is the symbol in the work Rain by Barbara Agreste in context of life and death and in Ana Grobler’s video Superultra, where the theme of menstruation is articulated in a critical perception. In the work Ecstasy Poem by Kika Nicolela, the artist compares two faces of the same woman (actress Liv Ullman) looking at the camera in slow motion. Whereby in one portrait the portrayed woman is young and at the peak of her beauty, in the opposite frame she is already aged. Michelle Handelman visualizes in Folly & Error a performance of two women related together with a red pant as a singular corpus, moving through a landscape of nature in an obscure choreography. The video work Red Velvet by Evelin Stermitz symbolizes abstract connotations of the color red in context of the media itself and its use/abuse of power and sexuality.

V svojem bistvu rdeča simbolizira močna čustva, globoke nagone in impulze. V odnosu do žensk ta močna in premetena barva postane barva spola v okviru različnih kontekstov.

Ana Grobler v videu Superultra s kritično percepcijo artikulira tematiko menstruacije. Kika Nicolela v Ecstasy Poem v počasnem posnetku primerja dva obraza iste ženske (igralke Liv Ullmann), ki hkrati gledata v kamero. Red Velvet, delo Evelin Stermitz, simbolizira abstraktne konotacije rdeče barve v kontekstu samega medija in uporabe/zlorabe moči in seksualnosti.

About the exhibition:
The idea of “The-Dump.net” was conceived by French artist and theorist Maurice Benayoun. It comes down to a dump of thoughts. It exists in the form of an Internet blog which comprises concepts of works in theoretical or hypothetical shape, ideas too complex to be realized, and not clearly defined, transient thoughts being born each day in artist’s mind.

What is the difference between today’s artists and regular citizens? Since the Renaissance the situation was clear as the craftsmanship was an indispensable element of artistic production. The artist worked according to disegno – the intellectual idea – and the capability to put it into practice was essential. In the 20th century the proportions reversed: the craft ceased to matter and artistic activity shifted into the sphere of pure conceptuality. Today, the final work can be as well accomplished by another person, be born through coincidence, or the viewers themselves can become co-authors or provide conditions for it to appear.

“The Dump – Recycling of Thoughts” is an experiment whose construction brings to mind an Internet forum. The artists invited to the project will be asked to realize concepts picked up from the dump.

Metka Zupanič is participating with the project Wish To Be There, 2010

The first known labyrinth was built by Daedalus, Greek artists, to keep the monster, Minotaur, away of people, of civilization. Later, labyrinths were used to symbolize a hard path to God, as symbolic forms of pilgrimage. This double meaning conveyed in the image of labyrinth, has stayed within cultural and visual history of mankind throughout the modern times.

In her recent work, she deals with the art system as something opposed to an artist. Artist is struggling in an environment, which is constantly puzzling him, where the paths could lead to many dead-ends but sometimes also to the “highest throne”, which are in this case the most famous art institutions. In the art world, an artist is constantly walking through the labyrinth, not knowing, whether he will meet a Minotaur or God on the next corner…

(Labyrinth is made from the names of well known galleries and institutions..)

The project is an interpretation of the Maurice Benayoun’s blog post Bibliography generator from July 2, 2008

Vesna Bukovec produced a series of 5 drawings entitled I promise to change the world but only if 10 other people will do the same, 2010.

Following Maurice Benayoun’s post To Change the World from June 18, 2008 in which he suggests to make a catalogue of all the things in our environment that can be changed by our activity she started to think about the level of moral responsibility of contemporary (western) individual. Her project is not just a realization of an idea from the blog, but an interpretation that critically and ironically deals with the social / political / environmental activities initiated by social networks on the internet.
